Team sought to revamp Penrith Stadium

Australia’s New South Wales Government is on the hunt for a project partner to refurbish Penrith Stadium.

An Expression of Interest (EOI) process has been launched to find a team to deliver the renovated stadium.

The redevelopment aims to transform Penrith Stadium into the ‘best suburban stadium in Australia’ and offer a significantly improved experience for families and fans, year-round.

Penrith Stadium is a rugby league and association football stadium located in Penrith, New South Wales, Australia. The 22,500-capacity venue is the home ground for the Penrith Panthers who play in the National Rugby League (NRL).

The Penrith Panthers are a New South Wales (NSW)-based Australian professional rugby league football club based in the Western Sydney suburb of Penrith, some 55 km west of the center of Sydney and at the foot of the Blue Mountains.

Penrith Stadium is slated to become a superior venue for different forms of entertainment, significantly improving the experience for spectators, with more food outlets and amenities, new scoreboards and ribbon boards, sound systems, upgraded lighting and more recreation space.

The redevelopment will include a new western grandstand and refurbished eastern grandstand increasing the ground capacity to 25,000. Grandstands have been reconfigured to maximise seating with premium views between the try lines to be steeper to bring fans closer to the action.

New player facilities including four new changerooms will help grow female representation in rugby league and other sporting codes.

Additionally, the training field to the west of the stadium will be remodelled to create new quality open spaces with multipurpose courts and improved landscaping for further outdoor community use and entertainment events.

The design prioritises accessibility, with a 500% increase in wheelchair accessible seating and an 85% increase in accessible toilets.

It will also incorporate a Connecting with Country Framework to acknowledge the area’s First Nations history, as well as sustainable design.

The community has been actively involved in shaping the future of the stadium and will be invited to make a submission on the designs when the State Significant Development Application is placed on public exhibition in the coming weeks.

The A$309 million project will be a boost for Western Sydney and will support local jobs during construction and once it is operating.

To facilitate the redevelopment, the stadium is expected to close after the 2024 NRL season, and re-open in 2026. Construction timeframes are subject to planning and procurement processes.

Venues NSW will operate the stadium once completed. Venues NSW have a strong track record in successfully operating similar venues across NSW, including Accor Stadium, the SCG, Allianz Stadium, McDonald Jones Stadium, WIN Stadium and CommBank Stadium.
