The Serie A clubs Inter Milan and AC Milan are looking to build a new joint stadium replacing their home ground – the San Siro Stadium in Milan, Italy – which has been the clubs’ home since the early 20th century.
‘VERSUS’ stated that the future of the San Siro Stadium has been up in the air for some time now with the clubs initially looking into building a new stadium, then two separate home stadiums and eventually trying to renovate the iconic ground. However, the renovation of the stadium has been deemed financially unfeasible.
The Inter Milan is an Italian professional football club based in Milan, Lombardy (Italy). Inter is the only Italian side to have always competed in the top flight of Italian football since its debut in 1909.

The San Siro (officially the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza) is a football stadium in the San Siro district of Milan, Italy. It has a seating capacity of 80,018 making it the largest stadium in Italy and one of the largest stadiums in Europe. It is the home stadium of the City’s principal professional football clubs – AC Milan and Inter Milan – who share an intense rivalry.
Earlier, the AC Milan was planning to build a new 70,000-seat stadium in San Donato Milanese, Italy, as a mixed-use development.
The Serie A club Inter Milan had also formally presented their plans for a new stadium project in the area of Rozzano outside Milano, Italy.
‘VERSUS’ further stated that the original plan of building a new ground is underway once again with the clubs taking steps to buy the land surrounding the original stadium. The AC Milan Owner Gerry Cardinale has expressed interest in creating an American-style stadium that can double as a live event space, hosting concerts and other sporting events to generate revenue.
If the clubs do get the green light to build a new stadium they would become the owners of the old San Siro. The legendary ground has been designated a site with exceptional “cultural interest” so it can’t be demolished but it will be repurposed in the future.
A new stadium in Milan would be the first built in Italy since 2011 with the Serie A team Juventus FC’s home ground – the 41,507-capacity Allianz Stadium in Turin, Italy. As the culture around football grounds changes with bigger and better stadia being built across the world, it’s time for Italy to change with the times. Leave it to the Milanese to usher in that new era.
