The National Football League (NFL) team Washington Commanders (US) announced a stadium naming rights deal with the American credit union – the Northwest Federal Credit Union – recently.

‘Reuters’ stated that the Washington Commanders home facility in Landover, Maryland (US) will be called the Northwest Stadium. The eight-year agreement runs through 2031 and is effective for the 2024 season.

The Washington Commanders are a professional American football team based in the Washington Metropolitan area (US). The Commanders compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member of the National Football Conference East division.

The Northwest Stadium is an American football stadium in Landover, Maryland, five miles East of Washington, D.C (US). The stadium is the home of the Washington Commanders of the National Football League (NFL). From 2004 until 2010, it had the NFL’s largest seating capacity at 91,000. It currently seats 65,000.

The Northwest Federal Credit Union (NWFCU) is an American credit union founded in 1947. The company is headquartered in Herndon, Virginia (US) and is regulated by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA – the independent Federal agency created by the U.S. Congress to regulate, charter and supervise the Federal credit unions). Northwest serves more than 279,000 members throughout Northern Virginia and Maryland and has over US$4 billion in assets.

‘Reuters’ further stated that the financial terms were not disclosed but sources revealed that the Northwest Federal is paying more than $8 million per year for the arrangement.

The 65,000-seat stadium, which opened in 1997, was known as the FedEx Field from 1999 until February 2024 when it was temporarily rebranded as the Commanders Field.

Observed Josh Harris, Commanders Managing Partner, “The Northwest Federal Credit Union has been an integral part of this community for generations and we could not be prouder to partner with an organization as committed to the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) as we are. As we continue to work toward our goal of building the Commanders into an elite franchise that consistently competes for Championships, we are excited to welcome our team and fans to the Northwest Stadium and look forward to creating incredible memories together on the field and in the communities we serve.”
