The future Atlético Madrid Sports City, which will be built on five parcels of land around its current Metropolitano Stadium, will entail an investment of more than €350 million.
EL Pais said the figure has been quoted by the promoters of the project, who have already concluded the design and planning phases and are set to start construction work.
The club has now requested that Madrid City Council issues licenses so that work can begin. Part of the works will be financed with the money contributed by the CVC fund to LaLiga Impulso.
LaLiga and global investment fund CVC signed a strategic agreement in 2021, setting in motion Boost LaLiga (‘LaLiga Impulso’), the project to boost the global growth of LaLiga and its clubs.
Under the terms of the deal with the City Council, three of the five plots of land will be transferred to Atlético Madrid for a period of 75 years, while the remaining two will be dedicated to the construction of the new sports facilities which the residents of Madrid will be able to access.
Atletico firstly want to build a new training ground, which includes six football fields, a gym and a medical centre next to the stadium.
The 68,456-capacity Metropolitano Stadium, also referred to as Cívitas Metropolitano for sponsorship reasons, is a stadium in Madrid, Spain. It has been the home stadium of Atlético Madrid since the 2017-2018 seasons.
It is located in the Rosas neighborhood in the San Blas-Canillejas district.
The sports city complex will also boast a new 6,000-seater stadium for Atletico’s women’s team and youth teams, as well as public pitches.
But the Spanish giants are not only looking to invest in football-related matters. They plan on developing an athletics stadium, as well as four indoor multi-sports courts.
There will even be an artificial beach for volleyball, complete with artificial waves for surfing. Plans are also on the boards for a golf course and a climbing wall.
Atletico want to capitalise on public use of their facilities and will build a hotel and car park too.
Oscar Mayo, their general director of business and operations, said: “This is a very ambitious project that the club had for years, with a vision from the CEO, Miguel Angel, to build the entire sports city and entertainment complex around the stadium.
“Without a doubt it will energise the city and will be transformative for the club, as well as its neighbours.”
