France lands 2028 ice hockey extravaganza

France will organize the Ice Hockey World Championship in 2028 for the third time in its history after the 1951 and 2017 editions.

‘FFHG’ stated that the Accor Arena in Paris and the LDLC Arena in Lyon – both in France – will host the 16 best teams in the world from May 12th-28th, 2028.

The Ice Hockey World Championships are an annual international men’s ice hockey tournament organized by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF).

The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) is a worldwide governing body for ice hockey. It is based in Zürich, Switzerland, and has 82 member-countries. The IIHF maintains the IIHF World Ranking based on the international ice hockey tournaments.

The 20,300-capacity Accor Arena, also known as Paris-Bercy, is an indoor sports arena and concert hall located in the neighborhood of Bercy, on the Boulevard de Bercy, in the 12th arrondissement of Paris, France.

The 12,523-capacity LDLC Arena is a multipurpose indoor arena located in Décines-Charpieu in the Metropolis of Lyon, France. Owned by the OL Groupe, the arena opened in November 2023 and is mainly used for sporting events and concerts.

‘FFHG’ further stated that on May 24th, on the occasion of the IIHF annual congress, the members of the International Federation validated France’s bid and the country landed the showcase event.

Cergy (France)-based the French Ice Hockey Federation (FFHG) is the governing body of ice hockey in France as recognized by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). It was founded in 2006.

Enthused Pierre-Yves Gerbeau, President, FFHG, “I am hugely moved due to the trust reposed in us and for entrusting us with the responsibility to host an event of such great magnitude. This event will bring to fore our expertise in staging showpiece events.”

Éric Ropert, General Director of FFHG, Philippe Lacarrière, Member of the FFHG steering committee and inductee into the IIHF Hall of Fame were instrumental in France landing the ice hockey spectacle.

France will be hosting the Ice Hockey World Championship in 2028 with the next Winter Olympics in 2030 most likely to take place in the French Alps.
