Italian Serie A club Lazio have outlined plans for redevelopment of the crumbling Stadio Flaminio in Rome.
Gazzetta said the club propose expanding the venue from 25,000 seats to 50,000 adding a new roof and improving parking in the area.
The president of Lazio, Claudio Lotito, and the mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri met recently to discuss the future of Flaminio Stadium, which Lazio wants to transform into its own home venue.
Società Sportiva Lazio, commonly referred to as Lazio, is an Italian professional sports club based in Rome, Italy, most known for its football activity. The society, founded in 1900, plays in the Serie A and has spent most of their history in the top tier of Italian football. Their current home venue is Stadio Olimpico.
The 30,000-capacity Flaminio Stadium is a sports center near to Piazza del Popolo and based on the architectural and engineering project by Pier Luigi Nervi and his son Antonio (his father is considered one of the Italian masters of concrete architecture in the second half of XX century).
The stadium also features a 25-meter swimming pool with four lanes, a boxing and weight gym, a fencing gym, and a space dedicated to artistic gymnastics.
The stadium has remained unused for over a decade and is now in a poor state, something that Lotito has had to contend with.
Lazio need to iron out a number of issues, from the lack of a roof to parking facilities to the state of the stands.
Lotito said, “I think the meeting went well. We gave a deadline of October to better select the technical aspects. I think the municipal administration understood the seriousness and meticulousness with which we addressed the problem, trying to safeguard the regulatory aspects and the entire architectural aspect of the Flaminio stadium.
“The mayor was pleasantly impressed from this point of view, he said that he appreciated the work we have carried out which is to protect both its safeguarding of the architectural spirit and of the future perspective”.
For the redevelopment of the Flaminio, two other projects were also presented to the Municipality of Rome: one by Roma swimming, the other by Credito Sportivo.
The decision on the final choice will be up to the Municipality of Rome.
