Rutgers baseball will be the first tenant for a new 6,500-capacity ballpark that will be located on the campus of the Middlesex College, and the town of Middlesex, New Jersey, US, is also issuing a request for qualifications (RFQs) seeking other franchise tenants.

‘SPORTSBUSINESSJOURNAL’ stated that the initial lease term is five years and the RFQ responses are due by October 15th.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights baseball is the varsity intercollegiate team representing Rutgers University (a public land-grant research university consisting of three campuses in New Jersey) in the sport of college baseball at the Division I level of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). A request for qualifications (RFQs) is a step sometimes used in the formal process of procuring a product or service, for example, by a Government agency. It is typically used as a screening step to establish a pool of vendors that are then qualified and thus eligible to submit responses to a request for proposals.

A request for proposal (RFP) is a form of reverse auction that solicits a business proposal by an organization interested in the procurement of a service or product from the potential suppliers. It is usually part of a complex sales process and made through a bidding process.

‘SPORTSBUSINESSJOURNAL’ further stated that the multipurpose outdoor stadium, designed by AECOM, will feature an artificial turf playing surface accommodating a variety of sports (baseball, football, soccer, and lacrosse) and 3,500 fixed seats when it opens in 2026.

Dallas (US)-based AECOM is the world’s trusted infrastructure consulting firm delivering professional services throughout the project lifecycle – from advisory, planning, design and engineering to program and construction management.

The venue will feature multiple concession stands, indoor and outdoor bar spaces and a dedicated team and office space for the tenants. The venue will include eight luxury Boxes that can be combined into three doubles and two single Boxes as well as two party decks and an interior party room. Standing room plus 1,500 deployable seats along one sideline for certain sports contribute to the overall 6,500 capacity.

The Middlesex County Improvement Authority will operate the stadium. The County (with a population just over 863,000) includes the Cities of New Brunswick (home to Rutgers), Piscataway and Perth Amboy and sits across a narrow body of water from the Staten Island.

The Middlesex County Improvement Authority is a public body, politic and corporate constituting a political subdivision of the State of New Jersey.
