Developer SWMunich Real Estate has welcomed new neighbors to its MUCcc Arena scheme in Munich, Germany.

Munich Arena said the Technical University of Munich (TUM) is moving into the LabCampus at Munich Airport and will thus become its direct neighbor.

Designed by Populous, the arena will be located in a new green space next to LabCampus, the technology and innovation centre at Munich Airport, with the seating to be arranged in a 270° horseshoe shape.

SWMunich will build and operate the 20,000 capacity venue, backed by more than €300 million of private sector investment.

With the construction of the new “Convergence Center” at Munich Airport, TUM will play a key role in the further development of future topics such as aviation, mobility, robotics and security.

The complex creates a unique ecosystem in which people from science, business, culture and society work together to bring innovations from the Europäische Metropolregion München e.V. to the world.

The LabCampus will be a hotspot for innovations with space for global players, hidden champions and start-ups working on the technologies and ideas of the future.

Lorenz Schmid, director of SW Munich said: “Munich Airport provides the ideal backdrop for the realization of the Munich Arena, one of the most modern and largest concert arenas in Europe, which will be built together with our partners Populous, LATZ+PARTNER and schlaich bergermann partner sbp for up to 20,000 fans.

“The attractive and dynamic environment at the airport was one of the decisive criteria for our choice of location.

“In addition, the steady expansion and development, which is now also being driven by the partnership between the Technical University of Munich, the Munich Airport and the Lufthansa Group, is a strong signal of the attractiveness and dynamism of this region.

“It is exciting to see how Munich Airport is growing into a premium innovation hub – a location where not only forward-looking technologies, but also culture, entertainment and cutting-edge international research find their place.”

Populous said MUCcc Arena will deliver the ultimate entertainment venue, offering spectators a world-class experience. The multi-use arena will be a climate-neutral, flexible event space capable of hosting a range of sporting and live entertainment events.

Populous’ winning design for the arena was selected after a multistage architecture competition.

It draws upon Bavarian heritage and character to create an eye-catching concept for the new arena, with the support structure skilfully paying homage to the lozenge shape used in the Bavarian State flag.

This instantly and clearly associates the arena with the South of Germany and creates a high recognition factor. The arena’s structure means that even from a distance, visitors can see inside the arena and get a taste of the entertainment that awaits them.

The interior design takes into account the ever-increasing demands of artistes in terms of technology, stage shows and productions. Countless details are tailored to satisfy the needs of artistes, organizers and visitors, and to provide incomparable concert and live experiences.
