The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has informed that the Commonwealth Games Scotland (CGS) has received the government support it requires to proceed with its innovative proposal to host the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow (Scotland, UK) in 2026.

‘commonwealth sport’ quoted the CGF President Chris Jenkins as stating, “We have been working with Commonwealth Games Scotland (CGS) and the Scottish Government for several months and are delighted to hear that the CGS has received confirmation of support from the Government to enable them to progress with their proposal to host the Games in 2026. At the heart of our discussions has been an investment of £100 million from the CGF and the commitment that Glasgow 2026 would not require financial underwriting from either the Scottish or the United Kingdom Governments. The additional generous contribution of around £2.3 million from Commonwealth Games Australia to the Glasgow concept will further enhance the Games delivery and is a strong sign of the support and excitement for the concept within the wider Commonwealth Games Movement.”

London (UK)-based the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), currently known as the Commonwealth Sport, is the international organization responsible for the direction and control of the Commonwealth Games and the Commonwealth Youth Games and is the governing body of the Commonwealth Games Associations.

The Commonwealth Games is a quadrennial international multisport event among athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations which consists mostly, but not exclusively, of territories of the former British Empire.

The Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) is an international multisport event organized by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF). The games were held in the years, midway between when the Commonwealth Games are held, until 2008. They continued to be held every four years, but in the year after the Commonwealth Games are held, from 2011 to 2015. Since 2017, they have been held in the year before the Commonwealth Games are held. The first edition was held in Edinburgh, Scotland from August 10th-14th, 2000. The age limit of the athletes is from 14 to 18.

The Commonwealth Games Association is a National Sports Council of the Commonwealth Sports Movement. Each association is responsible for organizing, supporting and overseeing their national team for both the Commonwealth Games and the Commonwealth Youth Games.

The Commonwealth Sports Movement is a global sporting movement that unites the citizens, the communities and the athletes from the Commonwealth through sport. The movement is driven by the values of humanity, equality and destiny. The Commonwealth Sports Movement’s vision is to build peaceful, sustainable and prosperous communities globally.

Stirling (UK)-based the Commonwealth Games Scotland (CGS) is the lead body for Commonwealth sport in Scotland and the membership is made up of the Scottish governing bodies of 28 recognized Commonwealth Games sports and organizations sharing a common purpose.

Melbourne (Australia)-based the Commonwealth Games Australia is the Commonwealth Games Association for Australia and is responsible for representing and promoting the Commonwealth Sport Movement in the country and organizes the participation of athletes at the Commonwealth Games and the Commonwealth Youth Games.

‘commonwealth sport’ further quoted Jenkins as stating, “We believe Glasgow 2026 will be an important first step in our commitment to reset and reframe the Commonwealth Games as a co-created, sustainable model that minimizes costs, inspires the athletes and inspires the Hosts and the International Federations. We will work closely with the CGS to positively conclude the final stakeholder discussions with the aim of formally announcing Glasgow as the Host City for 2026 as soon as possible.”

The CGF thanked all the Commonwealth Games Associations (CGAs) as well as the athletes, the International Federations, the National Governing Bodies, and the wider stakeholders for their continued support and patience.
