Spanish FA proposes 11 venues for WC Image: Anoeta Stadium, Bhgh543bgf, CC BY-SA 4.0

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has revealed the 11 stadiums that will be included as candidates to host matches in Spain for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

The RFEF said two years of painstaking work went into finalising the venue choices.

The 2030 FIFA World Cup will be the 24th FIFA World Cup, a quadrennial international football tournament contested by the men’s national teams of the member-associations of FIFA.

The 2030 World Cup will mark the centennial World Cup competition. For the first time, three countries from two continents will host the competition, with Spain, Portugal and Morocco as the host nations.

Additionally, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay will serve as the nations that open the event as a commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the first World Cup in Uruguay.

This will be the first World Cup held in Africa since 2010, in South America since 2014 as well as in Europe since 2018.

Spain will contribute 11 venues, there will be six in Morocco and three in Portugal, complying with FIFA regulations to present a maximum of 20 stadiums.

In order to determine the venues, a series of scales and objective criteria were applied, in line with FIFA’s bidding requirements, the RFEF said.

In total, 11 stadiums have been established, chosen after taking into account aspects such as the technical projects, operability, financial structure and facilities and infrastructure of the host cities, as well as the fulfilment of the documentary and contractual requirements.

The stadiums that will form part of the Bid Book will be:

  • Anoeta (Donostia-San Sebastián)
  • Camp Nou (Barcelona)
  • Gran Canaria (Las Palmas)
  • La Cartuja (Sevilla)
  • La Rosaleda (Málaga)
  • Metropolitano (Madrid)
  • Nueva Romareda (Zaragoza)
  • RCDE Stadium (Barcelona, Cornellá-El Prat)
  • Riazor (A Coruña)
  • San Mamés (Bilbao)
  • Santiago Bernabéu (Madrid)

The 45 sub-venues or Team Base Camps to be proposed in the official dossier have also been decided. These sub-hosts will allow the passion for football and the benefits of the World Cup to be spread throughout Spain.

Specifically, up to 16 autonomous regions will see facilities in their territories proposed as sub-venues in the dossier. Andalusia, Canary Islands, Cantabria, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Community of Madrid, Community of Valencia, Extremadura, Galicia, Balearic Islands, La Rioja, Navarre, Basque Country, Principality of Asturias and Region of Murcia all have representatives in this list.

The final decision on the use of these sub-venues, which will now have to go through a direct evaluation process by FIFA, will be up to the 2030 World Cup teams themselves.

Between venues and sub-venues, all the autonomous communities of Spain will be represented in the 2030 World Cup, which means a positive impact for the greatest number of citizens, whether through the creation of employment, improvement of infrastructures, attraction of tourism, attraction of foreign investment or transformation of the sports industry.

The list of facilities proposed as sub-venues includes both public and various private facilities throughout Spain.

Once the dossier has been presented, FIFA will confirm the joint candidature of Morocco, Portugal and Spain at its General Assembly on 11 December.

At a later stage, FIFA will then determine the venues that will definitely be part of the hosting of the World Cup.
