T20 Cricket tournament in the US receives huge criticism Image: ICC

The Nassau County International Cricket Stadium is being dismantled after hosting a series of matches in the T20 World Cup 2024.

Work began to tear down the pop-up venue in Eisenhower Park, New York shortly after India completed victory over the USA on June 12.

The Nassau County International Cricket Stadium is a 34,000-seat modular stadium that hosted eight matches in the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The stadium was built on the grounds of Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, New York (US).

Construction on the stadium began in January and took about four months to complete. The stadium featured 20 meter high general admission stands on the east and west sides which offered views of the Manhattan skyline.

There were hospitality and media pavilions on the north and south ends, while the north pavilion also featured Cabana seats along with the Corner Club seats with a private party area.

Four drop-in pitches, nurtured for the event in Florida, were transported over 1,000-miles to New York, where they were installed by a crane into the venue for the tournament.

Mykhel said, however, that the stadium which will take around 106 days to dismantle, attracted a fair amount of negative attention.

The pitch has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. The double-paced pitch behaved strangely, with some balls keeping low and others flying upwards from a good length.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) recognised the problem in a statement saying: “T20 Inc and the ICC recognise that the pitches used so far at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium have not played as consistently as we would have all wanted.

“The world-class grounds team have been working hard since the conclusion of yesterday’s game to remedy the situation and deliver the best possible surfaces for the remaining matches.”

The lack of floodlights was also criticised with poor weather affecting visibility at some of the matches, particularly during the much-hyped India v Pakistan clash.

Mykhel also stated that at any international cricket stadium, floodlights are a primary component and it was shocking that the ICC was so lacklustre in their plans.

The matches at the New York Stadium are day matches, but they should have prepared thoroughly to deal with all the adversities.

The 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is the ninth edition of the T20 World Cup, a biennial Twenty20 international tournament contested by the men’s national teams and organized by the ICC. It is being co-hosted by the West Indies and the United States from June 1st-29th, 2024.

This is the first time the United States has hosted a major cricket tournament. The tournament features 20 cricket-playing nations, including Uganda, who will be making their debut.
