Tamil Nadu (State of India) plans to build the world’s largest cricket stadium in Coimbatore (City in Tamil Nadu). It has recently floated tenders for the preparation of a detailed project report (DPR).

‘SWARAJYA’ stated that the proposed site for the stadium is 16 kilometers from Coimbatore City along National Highway (NH) 544 which connects Salem (City in Tamil Nadu) and Kochi (City in Kerala). The State plans to acquire 198 acres from the State Prisons Department which owns 200 acres in the area once the DPR is finalized.

A detailed project report (DPR) is a comprehensive document that outlines the details of a proposed project. It’s usually prepared before a project is implemented to evaluate its feasibility, potential risks, costs, and benefits. The DPR acts as a roadmap for the project guiding the stakeholders through each phase of development and implementation.

‘SWARAJYA’ further stated that according to senior officials from the Sports Department, a request for proposal (RFP) has been issued to prepare the DPR and to engage a design consultant among other necessary services for the development of the stadium. Interested bidders have been given a month’s time to submit their proposals.

A request for proposal (RFP) is a form of reverse auction that solicits a business proposal by an organization interested in the procurement of a service or product from the potential suppliers. It is usually part of a complex sales process and made through a bidding process.

The envisioned cricket stadium is expected to feature the largest spectator seating capacity in India. It will include five-star amenities for the members, the VIPs and the corporate sectors as well as state-of-the-art facilities for the players including a lounge, media and broadcasting centers, cafeterias, restaurants, viewing galleries, and a cricket museum.

The stadium will also boast advanced features such as an indoor practice arena, a specialized indoor fielding zone, pitch curation training facilities, lecture theaters, and a high-performance center.

Proposals for a restaurant, spa, dormitories, and recreation facilities for the players are also being sought. Additionally, a members’ clubhouse, sports bar and restaurant are in the planning stages.

In developing the design, the Sports Department has recommended that the bidders study the 38,200-capacity M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai (City in Tamil Nadu) and the 32,000-capacity M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru (City in the Indian State of Karnataka) as live case examples while also considering the renowned 31,180-capacity Lord’s Cricket Ground in London (UK) as a reference model.

The bidders have also been tasked with creating a forum for research and rehabilitation for the players, the umpires, the technicians, and the coaches, and incorporating the latest concepts in stadium design. This includes modern technological infrastructure such as media facilities and public relations (PR)-related services as well as high standards of public seating and hospitality.

Currently, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad (City in the Indian State of Gujarat) holds the record for the largest cricket stadium in the world with a seating capacity of 132,000. Designed by Australia’s Populous and built by Larsen & Toubro (L&T), this stadium was completed after five years of construction at an estimated cost of Rs 800 crore replacing the 100,024-capacity Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in Melbourne (Australia) as the largest cricket venue globally.

Populous is a global architectural and design practice with regional headquarters in Kansas City (US), London (UK) and Brisbane (Australia) specializing in sports facilities, arenas and convention centers as well as in the planning and design of major special events. The famed design firm’s Asia-Pacific headquarters is in Australia.

Mumbai (India)-based Larsen & Toubro (L&T) is an Indian multinational company engaged in engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) projects, hi-tech manufacturing and services. It operates in over 50 countries worldwide. A strong, customer-focused approach and the constant quest for top-class quality have enabled L&T to attain and sustain leadership in its major lines of business for over eight decades.
