Uganda venue work starts full throttle

Construction started at Hoima Stadium in Uganda

The construction of the new stadium in Hoima City (Uganda) has got rolling on August 15th in preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations to be hosted by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. The 20,000-seat stadium is scheduled to be delivered by December 31st, 2026.

If completed on time, the stadium will be one of the host venues for AFCON 2027.

‘KAWOWO sports’ stated that the project which is expected to be completed in 18 months time started with the clearing of the land and a formal meeting was held between the agencies responsible for executing the project.

The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, also referred to as AFCON 2027 or CAN 2027, is scheduled to be the 36th edition of the biennial African football tournament organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). It will be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda from June 19th-July 18th, 2027. For the first time, the tournament will take place in three countries.

6th of October City (Egypt)-based the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is the administrative and controlling body for association football, beach soccer and futsal in Africa. It was established on February 8th, 1957 at the Grand Hotel in Khartoum, Sudan by the national football associations of: Algeria, Egypt, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and South Africa.

‘KAWOWO sports’ further stated that on August 15th, the Minister of State for Sports and Education Peter Ogwang chaired a meeting at the site as the contractors went about with their work along with the construction crew in full gusto.

“I chaired a meeting today (August 15th) which was attended by the representatives of various implementing agencies, the City, the Ministry of Works (Consultant), the security personnel, the client, and, of course, the contractor whose workers have started clearing the land to start construction of the stadium,” Ogwang told newsmen following a closed-door meeting attended by among others the Hoima City Lord Mayor Brian Kaboyo, the Chairman of the National Council of Sports and Infrastructure for Pamoja 2027 (AFCON 2027), Ambrose Tashobya, the security officials, and the representatives from Summa, the company responsible for the construction work of the facility.

İstanbul (Türkiye)-based Summa is a global construction company established to undertake all kinds of turnkey construction projects such as the public buildings and the housing projects, business and the shopping centers, hotels, hospitals, healthcare and resort complexes, the industrial buildings and facilities, construction and rehabilitation of motorways, airports, channels, irrigation, water supply and the other infrastructure networks as well as the power transmission lines, pipelines, dams, and the land reclamation projects. It is also involved in several sports venue projects, including the stadiums and the indoor sports complexes.

Added Ogwang, “Our timeline in terms of implementing the above project is 18 months and we have already spent more than a month on the mobilization exercise. Now that the work has started, the entire land is going to be secured and we are going to deploy the security personnel to ensure that the construction work continues in a hitch-free manner.”

Ogwang informed that the price tag of the development stands at $ 130 million and will boast an indoor sports arena where boxing, basketball, netball, and volleyball can be practiced. It will also enjoy a swimming pool, athletics tracks and a training pitch.

He summed up on a positive note, “I am confident that the construction company Summa will go above and beyond to meet the deadline set and will do a perfect job.”
