Oscar Feng is enlivened that the company that he works for – the Unilumin Group (China) – is basking in its light-emitting diode (LED) glory. The company was founded in 2004 and just in 19 years they have become one of the world’s largest manufacturers of LED displays.

Oscar Feng, Global Sports and Landmarks Director, Unilumin Sports, China, tells ‘Coliseum’ in an exclusive conversation that Unilumin is a company which takes the bull by the horns and always hands out meaningful solutions to its customers. Founded in 2004, Shenzhen (China)-based Unilumin Group possesses the world’s largest intelligent manufacturing base for LED displays with a total area of 400,000 sqm. Unilumin has a production capability of 714,000 sqm per year and 1,401 patents so far.

As the LED application pioneer, the Unilumin Group Company Limited is leading in LED application products and integrated solutions dedicated to LED product development, manufacturing, sales, and after-sales service domestically and abroad.

Beaming with pride, Oscar Feng stated that Unilumin has quite a few LED ‘feats’ to its hat – “We boast the largest LED display manufacturing base in the world. We have three factories in China with our base being Shenzhen and our new factory in Shenzhen is around 400,000 square meters. We go in for state-of-the-art production methods – automatic and robotic.”

Though Unilumin is one group, it has two segments – one segment is the LED display and the second segment is the LED lighting – “We want to offer all kinds of combination with LED displays and lighting to offer a complete solution. For the sports venues it is not just the scoreboard, the ribbon, the parameter but the sport lighting too which matters and we offer solutions for all.”

Case Study (Manchester City)

The Unilumin Group has done a yeoman task in the Premier League team Manchester City F.C. home ground – the 53,600-capacity Etihad Stadium in England (UK). They did a wonderful job to improve the club’s home ground pitchside display and infrastructure.

Feng informed that Unilumin provided 446 square meters of IP65 high-protection double-layer perimeter screens for the Etihad Stadium and the project passed the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) test with world-class product performance very suitable for outdoor all-weather use.

He added, “The soft rubber protective cover and silicone soft mask are designed to ensure that the players are protected from injury and meet the impact of external forces on the screen. The project uses Virtual Technology to allow the television viewers in different regions to see different ads on the double-layer perimeter screens, supporting high definition (HD) display and precision placement advertising to improve the value of advertising.”

Greg Swimer, Chief Technical Officer, Manchester City Football Club, swears by the Unilumin technology – “Well, this particular update and the plan for it really fitted into our vision trying to be at the forefront of sports and technology. We were looking for opportunities and we decided to invest and see what we could do with our pitchside display and infrastructure which are really important, the matchday, media experience in football. Unilumin are our strategic partner in this and hopefully for our future projects.”

Added Swimer, “Pitchside media are one of the valuable assets we have in the Premier League (the top tier of England’s football pyramid). The two tier systems give us a much wider range of technological possibilities. We can use those to help get our partners messages and plans across and we can use those for entertainment too. The two-tier super-sized system that we have got that gives us just a whole range of possibilities. They are incredibly bright, incredibly sharp and we get phenomenal picture quality both in the stadium and on television.”
